The write up.

Okay, So when given a completely blank slate, no topic, and no idea of who your about to send a CD full of tracks to. How do you go about creating a track list?

Well I didn't really want to stick to a strict theme, so I just fixed apon the idea of creating a CD full of music that you might hear in the type of club you'd see in a film like "The Matrix". So whilst the perameters were not that restricted it still gave me something to aim towards..

[edit]: Also, as an after thought, this CD pretty much tells you, why my screen name is what it is, and should give you at least a little glimpse into what 'I', as a person am like..

Anyhow, Onto my choices...

"Frozen" - Celldweller

I discovered Celldweller about a year ago now. The guy who basically 'is' Celldweller -Klayton- is very involved in his music, and seems to constantly be working away on it, and in my opinion it shows in the quality of the mixing. Also If you read up on them a bit you'll see that he's very open to re-mixing of the songs he produces, as twice now he has run competitions (one currently on-going) for fans to remix his work.

I thought that Celldweller Blurred a few boundaries, and did a flipping good job of it -whilst I suppose still being generally classed as "Industrial" the self titled album has quite a bit of variety on the tracks, so it was well worth importing.

Why this track? Hmm, Well I first heard part of it on the end credits to a web animation on www.xombified.com - and it was one of those "Wow, whose that by?" So I guess I'm adding it because it was the first Celldweller Track I heard, and that was enough to turn me into a Fan.

"Invisible Wounds [The Suture Mix]" - Fear Factory

I'm not the biggest fan of Fear Factory - Although I don't mind listening to them every now and again, and have infact seen them once at Rock City. However this track is probably one of the exceptions to that general rule. I REALLY like this song/mix (The original has a rather annoying "shouty bit" in the middle.) probably because its really quite mild for Fear Factory.
This remix was featured -exclusively I think- on the Resident Evil Movie soundtrack.

Why this track? Perhaps partially because of the association to the film (and I love my Zombie films / Resident Evil), but also because I think it can show how heavier sounding music can still be ..well, with want for a better word, "Beautiful".

"Listen To My Voice" - Gary Numan

Could I make a CD of "cyber-goth-industrial-rock'ness" without including a Gary Numan Track? ..Well technically yes,(lol) BUT.. I felt in this case it would fit rather well. Gary Numan has definately been one of the pioneers of this genre of music and has been going since the early 80's I believe. (corrections welcome)... Incidentally, whilst I think to mention it, Fear Factory - the band above- Did a "heavier" cover of Gary Numans "Cars" Track. Which is now the version that Numan performs live.

Why This track? Sometimes Numan tracks can take a while to get going, and if you don't have the audio cranked right up, you wont hear whats going on for a while.. then when it kicks in... It deafens you! Lol. This is one of the tracks that DOESNT do this. plus, I kind of like the "dark, groovy'ness" of this particular track.

"Before I'm Dead" - Kidneythieves

From the closing scene's of the "Queen Of The Damned" Movie -which I actually liked a lot- This Female fronted band was probably one of the reasons that made me want to buy the sound track CD. I've tried 'getting hold of' I.E. #cough# downloading #cough# some more tracks by the Kidneythieves, and I can't say I thought the few tracks I did hear was quite as good as this one, but it all seemed reasonably good, I'll have to sit down and give them a proper listen one day.

Why this track? Because its a good example of how you can cross over genre's, (industrial/rock, and drumb & Bass/Techno) plus it's nice to seem some female vocal work in the genre.

"Lovers End" - The Birthday Massacre (TBM)

Probably one of my favorite bands at the moment, if not THE favorite. The Birthday Massacre seem to cross too many genre's to name, and their CD "Violet" is well worth the money. If I could urge anyone who listens to the Cd I've made to go and buy the Album of any band on this compliation, then this band would be the one.
(Plus I've been to one of their shows, and met them all and they are all really lovely people so they deserve the money.)
Their influences also seem to be really varied, and like wise the tracks on the album are also very varied. They should have another CD out later this year so I'm awaiting that with anticipation.

Why this track? Because its the first track off of their album, and because its my favorite one off of it. Yup, thats the only reasons I think I should give lol.

"Zwitter" - Rammstein

Never have I felt the word "Industrial" fits a band better than Rammstein. Okay, so yes, its a genre of music. But the word in my mind, also gives images of grime, oil and coal soot, of fires and heavy machinery.
Which -from what i hear- is pretty much what you get at a rammstein gig - well that and and 40ft penis'.

Rammstein probably have to be one of the highest bands on the "I must go see this band live" list - if for no other reason, then because I bought a top for £75 which I've never worn out once which would fit in perfectly with a Rammstein audience lol!

Getting back to the point though, Rammstein have had a gift to cross language barriers that no other band that 'I' have come across has managed. (with perhaps maybe the one off exception of "99 Red Balloons" by Nena, but I did hear the English version first.) I.E, that they sing predominantly in German so I have virtually no understanding of what is being said, yet I love their music enough to listen to it a lot and buy their CD's.

Why this track? Because its a well made, chugging, industrial track that, 'should' make you want to roll in coal dust, get your eyebrows singed off by pyrotechnics, and throw "the horns" whilst rocking your head back and forth like you WANT it to fall off...
Oh and because we should embrace music from other european nations. Lol.

"Killing Myself Again" - Dead Star Assembly (DSA)

I think DSA were once reffered to as "A dark rock version of Linkin park with synth." (Or something like that.) And I think whilst its a generalisation - which should always be avioded in music- its probably not to far off the mark. I got the first album, but mainly on the strength of some demo tracks from the "soon to be released" second album. This was perhaps something that I shouldnt of done, as I wasn't as keen on the first album.

Having said that though They really seem to have hit their 'groove' on their second album, and have what I consider to be some blinding tracks on here.

They fit nicely into a number of genre's, give the impression of being heavy, but actually arent really, have a wicked bassist that has actually returned emails I've sent to him, and sadly have never had a UK tour -to date.

Why this Track? Its the only one (that I know of) that has been turned into a proper music video from its respective album. So if you'd like to see how its visually supported then check out their myspace page. Its one of my favorite tracks off of their second album, and again I think they could do with some more support - particularly in the UK, so If I make a fan out of someone then thats great.

"The Only" - Static X

I first heard this track on a Playstation 2 game "need for speed underground". It was surprising to hear it there, as it wasnt the type of game I'd of expected to hear static X on. I've had dealings with Static X in the past, and bought their "Machine" album, when I was back in my college days.

Why this track? Because its a nice example of what Static X are capable of doing, that doesnt alienate people, that some of their other 'less main stream' tracks, might do.

"Velocity Shift" - Overseer

This was a track that I heard in the background of a phone advert, where a guy walks down the street and changes his appearance as he switches tracks (if I remember rightly). And it was an instant "I must have that track!" moment.
It's also popped up in a scene in the movie "Blade Trinity".

Why this track? Because its, short, sweet, and "super-cala-frag-a-listic" (listen to the track you'll see what I mean lol.

"Living Dead Girl [Subliminal Seduction Mix]" - Rob Zombie

Rob Zombie - Previously of White Zombie.
To me the guy is a legend, and my favorite artist. Ever.
Having said that, I have only two gripes with him.
1. He NEVER tours the UK. I don't know if the guy has a fear of flying or what, but he just NEVER plays here, and that sucks gigantic sweaty zombie balls!
2. His last album "educated Horses" wasn't all that great, and after "The Sinister Urge" and "Past, Present, Future" (A best of album, with a few new, and promising tracks) was a bit of a let down. Although I shall be re-listening to it soon, to see if perhaps given some time, it will now grow on me.
I have my favorite film EVER to thank for coming across Rob Zombie. The Matrix. The Track "Dragula" was used in the background at the club where Neo meets Trinity.

Since then, his music has cropped up on movies all over the place.

Bride of Chucky (twice in this film, two different songs)
Jeepers Creepers 2
Charlies Angels 2
The Watcher (?)
Air Heads
Beavis And Butt Head Do America

To name but a few that I can think of off the top of my head..

Why this Track? Because its Rob Zombie! (It's also a nice 'dance' remix that you can bop along to.)

"Misery" - Sulpher

I think these guys have only ever produced one CD, but its well worth purchasing if you can track it down.
Back tracking a bit here I've seen Gary Numan live twice, and on both occasions, I've never been "super excited" to see him. I like his music, but it doesn't get me excited about a gig like say for example, TBM, or MSI. However Sulpher were the support band for Numan the first time I went to one of his gigs. And I have to say, Honestly, I thought that they were more my type of thing, and more entertaining than Numan himself.
Sadly They seem to have done nothing since that point, now quite a few years ago.

Why This Track? Because its a nice blend of dark dancy'ness, synth work, and they really should get more press.

"Rock Is Dead" - Marylin Manson

If you've not heard of Marylin Manson, where the hell have you been for the last 10 years or so?
He really should be a man that needs no introduction. He creates controvery pretty much wherever he has gone, or by whatever he has done. If you listen to what you hear about him, you'd say he's a scary F**ked up freak. If you actually Listen to HIM, then its a completely different story, and I actually have a great deal of respect for the man and what he has tried to do. I really should get hold of his autobiography at some point.

Why this track? Again off of the Matrix soundtrack, this was probably one of the tracks that really started to turn my head towards manson music. Don't worry if when you listen to his music you dont like it, thats what happened to me, for about 3 years, I really wasn't keen on it at all, but then at a later point in my life, and after having seen him perform live at Download, my opinions really changed.

"Head Like A Hole" - Nine Inch Nails (NIN)

Well known in certain circles, at times controversial, inventive in their marketing. A lot can be said about NIN.
I've got - thanks to a friend- The whole back catalogue of Nine Inch Nails. Weirdly, I can listen to it, round someone elses, in a club, etc. (I dont know about Live, I've never had the money to see them.) But when I listen to it at home, I really can't be bothered. Theres I think, maybe a maximum of four tracks that I'll actually listen to of theirs though, and happily hear them again and again.

Why this track? This is probably the main one of those few. Its got a good "sing-a-long" chorus, its not over-long (like some NIN stuff), its also got some dark and dirty imagery from the lyrics.

"Shut Me Up" - Mindless Self Indulgence

A four piece band with an AMAZING amount of energy live. I have never seen a band as exciting to witness as MSI. Also there are two very attractive female members, and all of the band members are very friendly. This is the type of band that is actually worth getting excited about seeing, and indeed I am right at this moment as they are playing Nottingham Rock City in Late April (2007).

Their sound is far more 'electronic' but this is where my musical tastes have taken me of late. I wonder if part of that might be to do with me being a child of the 80's with the 8bit music of nintendo's and C64 games?

Why this track? Its short, its fun, its crazy, leap-around-your-room-and-trash-the-place-whilst- laughing-manically-only-to-regret-it-later-when-youve-calmed-down music. It has no real deep meaningful lyrics, so you just enjoy it. Also its one of their songs that really couldnt be considered offensive.

"El Phantasmo and the Chicken-Run Blast-O-Rama [Wine, Women and Song Mix] - White Zombie

This is the only song I've included on here which is lucky enough to feature the same artist...kinda.
For the Uneducated -and as I briefly mentioned earlier. Before Rob Zombie went solo, this is the band he fronted.
I've been listening to White Zombie a lot reccently, as it's been giving me some great inspiration for my own band. As such, I wanted to some how fit it in here, but what with it being a more "rock" based song, I thought that this re-mix would be more appropriate.

Why this track? Because its one of the more successful remixes of the white zombie back catalogue.

"I Deny You" - DarkSeed

I don't know a lot about Darkseed other than to say that they're germany, but sing in english. I've got some of their newer stuff, as this track is one of their "yee oldies" but it didn't quite have the same feel.

Why this track? I guess this song features promenantly in an eventful time of my life, and the lyrics were quite thought provoking. At the same time it is a good example of how wide the "industrial/rock" genre can be.

"Involved" - Mesh

I know nothing about Mesh, in fact I'm not even sure how two whole albums of their music came to be on my hard drive! lol. Whilst search for more tracks to put on this CD I came across this Artist and just started flicking through the tracks. They don't actually sound too bad, so I think I might try listening to the stuff more when I get a chance.

Why this track? Because I wanted to fill up more space on this CD and this sounded alright. lol.

"The Bomb" - Alice In Video Land

An interesting Electronic song from an equally interestingly named band. I don't really know an awful lot about AIVL, except that they dont seem to tour much outside of festivals, I can't say I've heard of them playing the UK, but If i find out that they are going to play over here, then I'd definately like to see how they sound live.

Why this track? Because again, its short enough to hold interest, its funky electronic music, with a catchy melody that with any luck you wont get stuck in your head for days on end.

***********

Right, thats it.. thats the whole write up. I SERIOUSLY doubt that I've ever do a write up to this degree of detail again, (as the whole process of compiling, ordering, burning, testing, and writing up this info has taken several hours) but at least its a good way to start off my Mix Club days eh?
If I've missed the point of what I was meant to do then I think I might want to go weep in a dark corner for a bit! lol.
The only thing I can suggest about the CD, is that if the recipient doesnt like it, please just forward it onto someone else in the group. Even though this IS my own opinion, I think its got some cracking tracks on there, and someone somewhere will hopefully appriciate it ;-) lol.

Fantastic write up Steven, although the bit about Gary Numan made me feel very old. I was listening to Tubeway Army back in 1978 ... :-)

OMG thank you so much, I am THRILLED, I came in the door bemoaning the dreary cack on my iPod to find your CD. I am going to whack it on there and give all a listen, and then review in some days.

Thanks! xx Yoko xx

Hello, it's me Yoko again.
I have not been able to get your CD to play on either my CD drive nor my CD player, which I dragged from the cupboard ceremoniously for the occasion.

Crap! Worst of all, it *does* play on my ex-boyfriend's Mac, so it's something to do with the fact I am on a PC. I will have to mull this over and try to find a way to listen to it. I am so sorry (and sad about) for the delay, and will give you my comments as soon as I am able to figure out a way to listen to it.

BAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Sheer Frustration!
