I am just waiting for three people to send me their addresses (*coff* Nichole, Steven and Pam *coff* - I'm looking at you). In the meantime, please feel free to post to this blog to say hello or talk about music or whatever ...
The article that Nancy posted a link to was quite interesting, although I think I could find bits of music that I like that would fall into all of the categories. It got me thinking though - are there any musical genres or styles that I really don't like? There are particular songs that grate on me - my current bete noir is the song used in a tv ad for a mobile phone where the ridiculously stressed line "blade of graa-aah-asss" is like nails down a blackboard (if you've seen it, you'll know what I mean).
Genres though, are a different thing. I know people who will say that they don't like Country and Western or Hip-Hop or whatever, harking back to that youthful tribal impulse where you would define yourself by a particular style, forsaking all others. If I'm honest, I probably wouldn't choose to listen to Swedish Death Metal when I put my feet up of an evening, but I can see that heard in the appropriate environment of a sweaty mosh pit it's a different kettle of fish.
If you can remember the early 80s, you can probably remember Elvis Costello - the ultimate street credible, post-punk, literate, cool dude. In 1981 he released an album called "Almost Blue" that, in the words of the warning sticker on the cover, contained "... country & western music and may cause offence to narrow minded listeners". It was certainly an unexpected move, but I enjoyed it and that element of surprise is something that I am looking forward to in this mix club.
Thoughts, anyone?

I'd normally say "I don't listen to C&W" but then the line blurs when I listen to the Notting Hillbillies or rhythm&blues or cajun music. The only thing that really grates on me is the current trend for 20-something male singers who really can't sing and growl/talk/out-of-key through the songs.
Not mentioning any singers who are their own cockney rhyming slang by name there ... :-)
If I'd read that article in high school, I would have been floored by how totally, completely TRUE it was! But now? It's the same for me. There's genres I prefer to others, but always exceptions.
