The madness version of this song is one of my all time faves. This version is nicely upbeat. It's a little more "New York Coffee House" than I'm used to and there are very definite hints of ukalele in there, but on the whole it's a nice gentle song.
2. Quicksand - Travis
I loved their first album but, for some reason, never listened to anything past that. It's an interesting contrast to the previous song, cos it's - well - a bit bloody miserable :) I think it's the backing vocals that are doing it. Not a song I'd go out of my way to listen to.
3. Lawyers Guns & Money - Warren Zevon
I've been a fan of The Zev for more years than I care to remember, and this track really sums up what he's all about - the humour, the lyricism and the sardonic turn of phrase, all wrapped up with his rich baritone vocal. The man!
4. Walk in Love - The Manhattan Transfer
Oh God it's horrible! Please make it stop!
5. Morning Dew - Tim Rose
Oo this is interesting - has a nice kinda "Vietnam protest song" thing going. Fantastic vocal and some excellent drumming. I'll have to look up some more of this guys music.
6. If it's Magic - Stevie Wonder
Never been much of a fan of this genre, although I do acknowledge that Stevie Wonder is a man of towering talent. Having said that, this is a nice song.
7. Oxford Town - Richie Havens
I like this - it has a kind of Johnny Cash meets Nick Cave at Bruce Springsteen's house going. Really nice forward drive to the thing, given the steam train impression the rythmn section and mouth organ are doing. Nice track.
8. Dance me to the end of love - Leonard Cohen
It's Leonard Cohen, therefore it's the best thing ever regardless of what it actually sounds like. Everything he's ever written, recorded, or even just looked at is automatically ACE.
9. Scratch & Sniff - Bela Fleck & the Flecktones
I'm knackered after that! I don't really feel qualified to say anything about this track cos I've no idea what was going on in it! I'm too thick to get this kind of music :) I did like the wierd synth noises though.
10. Hit the road to dreamland - Betty Hutton
While the song itself is quite lovely, it summons up far too many images of giant broadway smiles, straw boaters, and canes to sit comfortably on my narrow broadway-hating shoulders.
11. Ella Guru - Captain Beefheart & his magic band
There's a very large number of people who would proclaim Captain Beefheart as a music genius. That wouldn't be me, though. I just don't like it. At all. Which is strange, given that it's a helluva lot more musical than most of the stuff I listen to.
12. Brilliant Mistake - Elvis Costello
Sparkly, jangly and melodic! Lovely :)
13. Fugitive Motel - Elbow
I really really like this one - another one to be hunted out for further listening.
14. Ain't no Sunshine - Al Green
Another great track. Could probably have benefited from a bit less orchestration, but then who am I to criticise Al Green?
15. The Great Curve - Talking Heads
Um, no - not my thing. I do hope the person who made this mix doesn't get mind - I might break them!
16. Razor Boy - Steely Dan
I think this is from a part of the seventies that I was blissfully unaware of :)
17. Time of the Season - The Zombies
I think I'd probably have loved this about ten years ago, but age is bringing broken musical tastes upon me. It's a good song, but not one I'd go out of my way to hear.
18. God Song - Matching Mole
I think I shall refrain from commenting on this one in the name of group harmony.
19. Hold Your Head Up - Argent
The old staples :) It's at least twenty years since I heard anything like this! Shades of Deep Purple, Free, etc etc.
20. Thoughts of a Dying Atheist - Muse
This is a magnificent track, but really feels out of place on this mix, for some reason. I don't honestly know how Matt Bellamy manages to get himself so worked up during the course of a three minute song, but thank god he does. Genius.
21. Black Coffee - Peggy Lee
I'm sorry - this kinda stuff just makes me violent :)
Reading back through that, it comes across as very negative. Please don't get me wrong - I've really enjoyed every second of this mix. It's not all been to my taste to it's been a fascinating mix and given me loads to think about :)

That's a shame. I tried to put together a mix that ran the gamut of my tastes in popular music, but I don't think ours is a marriage made in heaven.
I'll go and slink back into a dark corner and keep quiet.
Ooh, I see you put some of personal favorites on there: Black Coffee, L,G&M, Dance me to the end of love, and I love the Manhattan Transfer and Steely Dan. I haven't heard either of those tracks, though.
I would say that you scored a pretty respectable hit rate on that mix Rosie. It's always good to choose tracks that evoke a strong reaction, either positive or negative, rather than something that is bland.
